1. God’s vision

→ To multiply His glory through people on earth

(Gen 1:27–28)27 So God created humankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. 28 And God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, …

(2 Tim 2:2)2 And the things you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, entrust to faithful people who will be able to teachothers as well !

2. Why Multiplication Is Important

When John Wesley died in 1791, he left behind a church with 10,000 cells and 100,000 members (i.e., groups of ten). The emphasis on the cell group died out 100 years after Wesley’s death. Why was that, actually? Doctors of theology investigated this question and concluded that the main reason for the decline of the Methodist cell structure was that the cells had become too large. Instead of maintaining small groups through division that fostered intimacy, the cells grew into churches. This is how the Methodist churches eventually came into being.

Multiplication is important because…

  1. Multiple entry points
    1. not just one in the congregation, but one in every cell group
  2. Fulfilling the Great Commission
    1. Multiplying cell groups provide a framework, structure, system, or method to ensure we do not lose our outward focus on the lost.
  3. More effective discipleship in groups of up to 12
    1. Shy people can open up more easily
    2. Fellowship is more intense
    3. Everyone gets a chance to speak up and share: opinions, testimonies, needs
    4. Greater motivation to invite new people

3. Types of Multiplication

  1. Mother-daughter cell group → Two groups of equal size 12/2=6+6
